North End Snowshoe Trails
The North End Snowshoe Trails are part of a larger cross-country ski and snowshoe trail system in the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest. These trails are specifically established, mapped, and marked for snowshoeing:
- Mammal Trail (Yellow Blazes): A unique collaboration with the Cable Natural History Museum, this trail features 25 metal cut-outs of common Northwoods mammals. See how many you can spot along the way!
- Bear Paw Trail (Blue Blazes): Branches off the Mammal Trail after about 1 km and loops back for a gentle woodland hike.
- Penny Lane (Red/Orange Blazes): A slightly more challenging loop that reconnects with the Mammal Trail. (Watch for red ribbons in recently logged sections.)
HASTA Hospital Trails
Maintained year-round by the Hayward Area Ski Trails Association (HASTA), the Hospital Trails are considered a local gem. Located adjacent to the Tamarack Health Hayward Medical Center, this trail system offers peaceful Northwoods snowshoeing just minutes from town, yet it feels like you’re deep in the forest.
- Plantation Loop: A peaceful, mostly flat loop circling a tall pine plantation. Ideal for a shorter outing and often filled with deer and rabbit tracks after fresh snowfall.
- Darrell’s Loop: Expands the route to approximately two miles, mixing pine and hardwood forest. The west side of the loop follows the lake shoreline, with benches offering scenic resting spots.
- White Pine Loop: Extends the system to roughly three miles. This section features more open forest, large old-growth red and white pines, and well-marked intersections.
- Far Out Loop: Completes the full four-mile system and includes the only rolling terrain on the snowshoe trails. A quieter section that offers a deeper-woods feel while still close to town.
